MAUI HOSPITALS SET FOR JULY 2017 TRANSITION
Despite Delays Maui Hospitals Prepare for 2017 Transition
WAILUKU, MAUI, Hawai‘i (October 27, 2016) – The Board of Directors of the Hawai‘i Health Systems Corporation - Maui Region announces that it has set July 1, 2017 as the date when Maui Health System, Kaiser Permanente, will assume responsibility for the operation of its three hospitals, Maui Memorial Medical Center, Kula Hospital and Lāna‘i Community Hospital.
Maui Region Board Chair Avery Chumbley said, “while our transition may be delayed, we have much to do in the interim. We will commit to a transition date of July 1, 2017. Kaiser has already started to assist with bringing on board key medical staff. Maui Region’s board, executives and staff as well as Kaiser’s leadership and medical staff are eager to make Maui’s Hospitals stronger.”
HHSC CEO Dr. Linda Rosen said, “We very much appreciate the Governor’s negotiation efforts. The remaining issues will take us into 2017 before the transfer could occur. Therefore, setting the transfer date for July 1, 2017 will allow all parties to focus on providing high quality patient care.”
Maui Region CEO Wes Lo said, “the dedication of our employees and medical staff during these difficult times has been phenomenal. Ending the uncertainty will bring relief and hope for the future. We want to thank Kaiser Permanente’s team for their commitment. Kaiser has already begun filling key medical staff positions, which will only make our hospitals and services better.
